Story Points vs Time: Which Should Your Team Use?
A practical comparison of story points and hour estimates for agile teams.
Story Points vs Time
Most product teams should estimate in story points, not hours. Story points measure relative complexity, risk and uncertainty rather than elapsed time.
Why story points work
- They stay independent of who picks up the task.
- They reduce pressure for fake precision.
- Velocity becomes useful after several sprints.
When hours are useful
- Contract work billed by time.
- Highly routine operational tasks.
- Short work with fixed staffing and deadlines.
Forecasting with story points
Once the team has three or four sprints of history, divide remaining backlog points by average velocity. Share forecasts as ranges, not promises.
Recommendation
Use Fibonacci story points for sprint planning and reserve hour estimates for exceptional scheduling or billing cases.
